Olive oil, a cornerstone of Greek heritage, isn't just a kitchen staple, it's a skincare superhero backed by robust research. Extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO) is naturally rich in polyphenols and antioxidants like hydroxytyrosol and oleuropein which combats oxidative stress from free radicals, which accelerate aging and inflammation.

A 2022 study in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences highlighted how these compounds reduce cellular damage, promoting skin elasticity and hydration by strengthening the barrier function. Another review in Nutrients showed olive oil's anti-inflammatory effects, decreasing cytokines that cause redness and irritation.

A way to taste-test that you have a high-polyphenol EVOO is when you take a shot (yes, like a tequila shot) of olive oil and you feel a slight tingling, burning, or peppery-kick in your throat. It sounds a bit strange, but this burning sensation correlates to a high-polyphenol content. Polyphenols also act as prebiotics, which foster beneficial bacteria in the gut.

At Eleusia, we are incorporating olive oil in our future skincare formulas, but in the meantime are drinking/eating this liquid gold every day to protect against premature aging while balancing the microbiome.

Pro Tip: Take a shot of extra-virgin olive oil with freshly-squeezed lemon to support your gut-skin barrier. If you’re not quite that hardcore yet, you can also use this easy mixture as a dressing for any meal such as salads or fish. When mixed or shaken together, it is every Greek’s favorite ladolemono “λαδολέμονο” or olive oil - lemon in English. Daily use can enhance antioxidant and immune support.
